Client’s Fava PatchClient’s Request: I have a plot in a community garden and haven’t seen it for about a week. What is the perfect humidity level for a house During that week, the weather gave us some significant overnight frosts and winds. What is the perfect humidity level in a house When I went to my plot today, my stand of 6-foot-tall fava beans were looking very sad. What is the proper humidity in a house They’d been blown around, obviously, but it also looks like all the leaves from about two feet on down to the ground are either gone or turned brown, and the stems look brown, too. What is the proper humidity inside a house Can these plants be saved, or should I just turn them under as soon as the ground dries out a little? I was hoping to get some fava beans in the spring from a few of them.

MGCC’s Help Desk Response: Thank you for contacting Master Gardeners about your fava beans.

What is the proper humidity level for a house And, thank you very much for sending the photo. What is the proper humidity level in a home It was very helpful.

I do not think that the fava beans was damaged by the frost. What is the proper humidity level in a house Frost damage generally appears on the tops of plants rather than the bottoms. What is the recommended humidity in a house Also, fava beans are generally hardy down to 21 degrees. What is the recommended humidity level for a home Unless you are in a severe microclimate area, we have yet to see temperatures that low this winter.

Instead, I believe that the beans may have been affected by a fungal disease called Chocolate Spot ( Botrytisfabae). What is the recommended humidity level for a house Chocolate Spot has been found in fava beans in the northern San Joaquin Valley which is not far from us. What is the recommended humidity level in a house Chocolate Spot begins with small red-brown lesions on leaves and stems which can expand and, in an aggressive form, can lead to necrosis (death) of leaves and stem tissue. What is the right humidity level in a house The aggressive form occurs in high humidity situations, so, if this is the disease you are seeing, it could have come from the earlier rains. What is the right indoor humidity level I noticed also from the picture that there is a lot of plant material (weeds?) around the fava bean patch which could have also raised or maintained a higher humidity level. What is the right level of humidity in a house It is also possible that this is from some other fungus, but in any case I would suggest hand weeding in the area to increase air circulation to the plants.

With the weeding, it may be possible to save the plants for this year. What level of humidity should be in a house You have some flowers that would provide you with some beans to enjoy. What should be humidity level in house However, if you are interested in a larger crop you may want to remove these plants now and replant in February or March. What should be the humidity level in your house That is the planting time for growing fava beans as an edible (as opposed to cover) crop. What should be the normal humidity in a house In either case, once you are done with the plants, I recommend pulling them up and putting them in the commercial green bin for disposal rather than your compost pile. What should humidity level be in a house You should also avoid digging them into the soil, since that could cause the fungus to spread.

One other tip: You had mentioned and the photo shows that the plants had fallen over. What should humidity level be in home I have found that to be a common problem with fava beans myself. What should humidity level be in house I use my tomato cages in fava bean patches in my garden to help keep the plants upright.

pix: Monterey Bay MGsAnd how about this? If you are pruning your grapes or some other thornless vines… how about making some wreathes with the prunings. What should indoor humidity level be in summer Outside pruning to inside wreath making. What should the humidity be in my house canada Monterey Bay MG had an interesting how-to blog on how to do that.

And if you are inside looking for some interesting web browsing, how about checking out the many different blogs authored by other UC venues and UC Master Gardeners?… What should the humidity be in my house during summer We posted a blog on our phobia “ Blog Junkie”. What should the humidity be in my house uk You might find it interesting and subscribe to some of them… Most don’t post that frequently and usually not more than a 5 minute read… and can be both interesting and enhance your gardening knowledge.I find the Solano MG blog “ Under the Solano Sun”… and UC Davis’ “ Bug Squad” especially interesting, useful, and entertaining.

Finally, despite the weather, you can always bundle up and put your boots on and maybe under an umbrella (it can get that way sometimes…) get out to the garden and get dirty… Maybe the meme below will show you how and reduce your concerns about how it might look to your neighbors?…

UCANR photosAs promised, here are some links to information about growing fruit trees, from planting them to pruning and general care. What should the humidity level be in a home The first is a publication about planting and care of young fruit trees. What should the humidity level be in a house It includes good directions for planting a bare-root tree, initial pruning and sunburn protection: http://ceyolo.ucdavis.edu/files/53454.pdf. What should the humidity level be in my home It should be noted, that while a bare root tree is probably the most economical fruit tree to buy this time of year, retail nurseries are carrying fewer bare root trees over the last few years. What should the humidity level be in my house This next link is an article from the Sonoma County Master Gardeners specifically about planting bare-root trees: http://sonomamg.ucanr.edu/Plant_of_the_Month/Bare_Root_Fruit_Trees/. What should the humidity level be in your house Most nurseries now carry most of their fruit trees in containers and that is fine and will allow you more flexibility on when to plant. What should the ideal humidity level be in my house You should also get advice on initial pruning from an experienced nursery person when and where you buy the tree.

Persimmons are great trees for our backyard orchards. What would cause high humidity in a house They are mostly disease- and pest-free trees and give good fall color. Whats the normal humidity level in a house At the nursery, you might find two different Fuyu persimmons: Fuyu and Giant Fuyu. Acceptable humidity level in home They are quite similar, but the Giant Fuyu fruit is larger and a bit sweeter, according to the California Rare Fruit Growers. Acceptable humidity levels in a house (CRFG) Despite the name, the Giant Fuyu tree won’t grow quite as large as the Fuyu, possibly making this a better choice for a home garden. Acceptable humidity levels in house uk See more information about persimmons from the CRFG: https://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/persimmon.html. Acceptable humidity levels indoors CRFG is also a great source for information on growing “rare” fruit in our gardens.

You can find more information about frost tolerance by referencing reliable sources on the web such as UC web sites and books such as Sunset’s Western Garden or Sunset’s web site (www.sunset.com). Best humidity level for home in winter Just be sure you’ve zeroed in on your local conditions for climate.

I think all of your plants mentioned above should tolerate frosty weather just fine, but newly planted shrubs will be at more of a risk because their root systems have not yet become established.

Some of the tools to protect your tender plants include frost cloth, sheets, blankets, lights and stakes or framework to hold covers off foliage. Best humidity level in a house Frost cloth has the advantage that, because it allows light and air to penetrate, it can lay directly on foliage and can stay on the plants for a few days at a time. Best humidity level in home You can find frost cloth at a local nurseries, most home/hardware stores or online. Best humidity level in house Plastic is not usually recommended to cover your plants; plastic is not a good insulator and can cause more damage, especially if it touches the foliage. Best indoor humidity level in summer However, use of plastic over a frame could work; Ruth Bancroft Gardens in Walnut Creek uses such frames to protect their vulnerable plants.

If any of your plants suffer damage from frost this winter, wait until spring to prune out dead growth when all danger of frost has passed and new growth begins.

Here is a link to a publication from the UC Sacramento Master Gardeners about frost protection where you will find even more information and photos of how to cover plants: http://sacmg.ucanr.edu/Frost_Protection/ , Pictures are from SacMG document.
